KANSAS CITY, MO – DWalk is not your average trap rapper.
Using his own blend of melodies, DWalk – one of the hottest new hip-hop artists to come out of the Midwest – brings the “Killa City” slang to the genre in a unique way. He was inspired in his earlier life to do music when his uncle, Lil Zeus – from the Kansas City rap group Doe Boyz – was killed in a car accident in the early 2000s. Since that time, DWalk has developed a sound that is all his own and that is gathering more and more fans every day.
DWalk’s vision with music is not of the norm. With Kansas City being a city of violence – where the murder rate is sky high every year – he hopes to one day make a big impact on the local community and change the senseless acts of violence. Leaving a legacy to live on through his future children, he hopes to inspire and motivate others through his music.
“I wanna be known for making good music,” he said. “I don’t want to be known as one of those people who just makes a nice song and then you never hear from them again. I want to stay consistent and drop hit after hit. And I for sure want to let people get a piece of my life and how I’m living and how I came up. I try to deliver that message in every song.”
That unique sound and style is put on display with his new project, “Show Me Now” – a seven-song EP that he said should drop by the end of November. The first single off the EP, “Get a Grip” has already been released and is getting some good reviews. Like many of his songs, it was a single that was inspired in a flash of a moment.
“I was in the club and I heard a song that made me think of something and I just kind of started singing the melody right there,” he said. “I left the club and went right to the studio and started recording it. I freestyled the hook – I usually freestyle the hook and the rest just comes with it. Sometimes I’ll write and fill stuff in, but I try not to write too much because I like to freestyle and just be in the moment.”
“Get a Grip” is a song about pulling up with somebody else’s girl and having a good time with her and doing the little things that will convince her to leave her man. DWalk said it’s a song that has a little trap vibe to it, while at the same time carrying a melody – something that he said is indicative of his particular style.
“I’m not one dimensional,” he said. “I create different sounds and melodies. I’ve been putting together some nice music – music with a cool trap vibe to it. Basically anything I make I’m gonna make sure it’s got some bounce with it, so people can vibe with it.”
DWalk said he plans on dropping a mixtape sometime around the New Year, and that he hopes 2018 will be the year he gets established. He will also be dropping a music video for “Get a Grip” by the end of the year.
